I was recently in Seoul and, after my visit to Gwangjang Market, decided to walk back to my hotel in Myeongdong. Rather than take an Uber, I chose to stroll along the #Cheonggyecheonย Stream. This inclination has become routine now, all because of my career in destination development.

#CheonggyecheonStreamย is a restored urban waterway that flows through downtown Seoul. Once buried beneath a concrete highway, it has been transformed into a popular public space that successfully blends restored nature, cultural heritage, and modern urban design. Today, it serves as a peaceful oasis and a popular destination for both locals and visitors. #DestinationDevelopmentย varies greatly in scale. It can be applied to entire regions, but just as meaningfully to a single neighbourhood or even a small public space within a city, as in this case.

The restoration uncovered the ancient stream, reviving a vital piece of Seoulโ€™s natural and cultural heritage dating back to the Joseon Dynasty. Historical architectural elements, such as stepping-stones, invite visitors to cross the water just as people did centuries ago. I felt like a kid again, skipping across these stones and experiencing the playful side of heritage.

The transformation wasnโ€™t just about reclaiming the past but about creating a truly accessible and welcoming public space for everyone:

โ€ข Calorie-marked Distance Markers: Runners and walkers can track their progress, not just in meters but in calories burned.

โ€ข Stone Crossings & Bridges: Thoughtfully placed for accessibility and aesthetic charm, while nodding to antiquity.

โ€ข Benches & Rest Spots: Perfectly positioned for moments of rest or reflection.

โ€ข Clear Signage: Orientation signs direct users to exits, emergency routes, and points of interest. (I do wish there was more English and more educational content)

โ€ข Emergency Exits: Well-marked escape routes for sudden weather changes.

โ€ข Location Guidance: Simple, effective wayfinding elements throughout.

By restoring the stream, Seoul not only preserved a natural waterway but also revitalized the surrounding neighborhoods. I could see how the project might have spurred economic growth, improved air quality, and most importantly, created a vibrant public space that celebrates both heritage and modern urban life.

I absolutely love when such thoughtful interventions honour history, enhance quality of life, and create destinations that communities can enjoy.
