Inspired by the ancient murals found in the cave temples of Dambulla these paintings on wood recreate a bygone era of kings and princes. Murals and paintings on walls of caves and temples had always found a place in Sri Lanka’s heritage. However after the religious revival initiated by 18th century King Kirti Sri (1747-1782), the art enjoyed a special patronage. As the gentle red, mulberry and green suffuse over the wood, it is reminiscent of the devotion of a revered king and his people.
